  18. If you have a Windows NT computer that participates in a trusted domain
  19. structure that is sometimes disconnected from the main network, you may
  20. experience problems accessing it from another computer when it is
  21. disconnected from the main network.

  23. An example of this scenario is the following:
  24.  
  25. A field engineer has two computers. One computer runs Windows NT and
  26. participates in a trusted domain. The other computer runs Windows for
  27. Workgroups. The computer running Windows for Workgroups is connected to the
  28. Windows NT computer, but the computer running Windows NT is not connected
  29. to the main network. Accessing the Windows NT computer from the Windows for
  30. Workgroups computer can result in the following error message:

  32.    Access Denied

  34. The Windows NT computer will look for the Domain Controller when it is
  35. accessed and it cannot find one, so it returns the above error message.

  37. WORKAROUND
  38. ==========
  39.  
  40. When you are not connected to the main network, you can change the Windows
  41. NT computer to be a member of a workgroup instead of a member of a domain.
  42. You can do this with the Network applet in Control Panel.
  43.  
  44. Now the Windows NT computer will not look for the Domain Controller. You
  45. must have a user with the permissions you want defined in the local account
  46. database or this will not work.
  47.  
  48. DonÆt forget to rejoin the domain you were in when the Windows NT computer
  49. is reconnected to the main network.

  51. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows NT and
  52. Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and
  53. will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
  54. becomes available.
